Speaking to Kicker, VfB Stuttgart Sporting Director Fabian Wohlgemuth has commented on what the future may hold for several key figures in the club’s success this season.
The biggest talking point surrounding Stuttgart is the future of talisman Sehrou Guirassy with several outlets reporting that the 27-year-old is interested in leaving the club in the winter but Wohlgemuth has given Stuttgart’s point of view on his future: “This is not an issue for us at the moment. This is one of the media. But the uncertainty of whether it’s going to happen in the summer or in the winter probably annoys you too. Imponderables are part of it, but nervousness is not. We focus on the things that are within our control so that he stays. Nobody can predict what will happen. We are convinced that he wants to stay. But we also know the mechanisms of the market.”
Another key figure has been the mastermind of Stuttgart’s run into third, Sebastian Hoeneß. Despite reported interest in Hoeneß, Wohlgemuth affirms the coach’s future at the club: “I don’t have the impression at all that Sebastian has any other professional interests than just working with our team…The last thing you can do is hold a trainer against his will. But the most important thing is that he feels comfortable and wants to work on building something here. This is the case.”
Hoeneß has been key in the development of several players this season. Guirassy has become one of the best strikers in the league. While Chris Führich has received a call-up to the international team and Deniz Undav has performed when called upon and may even deserve a call-up to the national team.
This shows the work that the former Hoffenheim coach has done at the club after a summer that saw Stuttgart lose several key players in Wataru Endo, Borna Sosa and Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Stuttgart continued their great start to the season beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 after a brace from Deniz Undav. The win sees VfB stay third in the Bundesliga five points behind Bayern Munich and three points ahead of Borussia Dortmund.
