Speaking to Sky Germany, VfB Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth has commented on the future of trio Sehrou Guirassy, Deniz Undav and Waldemar Anton.
All three have been key pieces in Stuttgart’s form in the first part of the season and as with any surprise team the key players will attract interest from a host of different clubs and Guirassy and Anton are no different.
The biggest talking point at Stuttgart heading into the transfer window is the future of star striker Guirassy, it has been reported that Guirassy has a €17.5m release clause and has attracted interest from the Premier League. Wohlgemuth did not give a conclusive answer on the 27-year-old’s future: “It is the case that he had arguments for himself and we had arguments for ourselves, in a situation that was far more difficult than today to extend the contract. Today, the arguments that speak for us actually weigh even more heavily. He feels how the fans love him. He feels how the team needs him. And he also feels how everyone wishes that he stays here with us. He’s a highly decent guy and that doesn’t leave him cold. So, we do everything that is in our hands and it will certainly not fail for us.” With Guirassy likely to be heading to the Africa Cup of Nations in the new year, a move away in winter does not seem to make much sense for the 27-year-old as he would have little time to integrate into his new team.
On the future of club captain Anton, Wohlgemuth confirmed he will play at the club beyond this season: “The captain’s armband speaks for itself. And here, too, we naturally want to work together in the long term. But he must also carefully think about the next step in this very special career phase. And we do that too. If there is something to say about it, it is facts and with that we also go public. But it’s not that far yet.” Previously, Anton also did not rule out staying at Stuttgart and left the door open over a potential contract extension in the future.
The next talking point was over the future of Undav, the German recently won Bundesliga Player of the Month for November and has really came into his own in recent weeks. On the future of Undav, who has a €12m buy option in his loan agreement with Stuttgart, Wohlgemuth said: “There are several parties sitting at the table and at this table, we do not have the greatest weight. Deniz has a contract in Brighton and the club in England will also be the lead decision on how things will continue in the situation. But: Deniz suits us, especially the temperament, even the topics outside the square are very, very important to him. And therefore: Of course, we are working on it, but this will also take a month or another until it is even possible to make nails with heads in this context,”
Stuttgart currently sits third in the Bundesliga one point behind Bayern Munich who are their opponents on Sunday. The winter transfer window will be important for the club to determine whether they can carry on their form and reach the Champions League for the first time in over 10 years.
