Owls boss Danny Rohl has confirmed Di’Shon Bernard will miss the rest of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has admitted he is ‘very sad’ to learn that defender Di’Shon Bernard will be ruled out for the rest of the season with a long-term injury.
The 24-year-old sustained the issue in last weekend’s last-gasp defeat at West Brom, and it is now revealed he will play no further part in Wednesday’s push for the play-offs.
The Owls continue to find themselves in a promising position in the second tier table, currently two points off a spot in the top six with 14 Championship games remaining of the campaign.
Bernard has been such a vital figure to their rise up the table, making 27 appearances in the second tier and starting the previous six consecutive league games prior to his withdrawal at The Hawthorns.
Chipping in with two goals, it’s undoubtedly a blow for Wednesday to lose such a key player in the heart of the backline, with the Yorkshire outfit being left weaker heading into a crucial final quarter of the season.
With no transfer window available to rectify the situation, Rohl has issued his verdict on the injury.
As reported by Sheffield Wednesday’s official website, boss Danny Rohl confirmed defender Bernard’s season had been brought to an abrupt end, revealing his disappointment over such an untimely blow.
Rohl said: “It’s a hard one, Dish is out of the season now, a big injury, it looks like six months so a big one. Tomorrow he will have a surgery. It’s very hard and also very sad, but I think I said this straight after the game, I did not have a good feeling.
“We have to step up with all the other players around us, it is not an easy situation, but we will stick together and help him through this.
“I cross my fingers for a good surgery tomorrow and then a good recovery. It’s not easy to take but we will help him come back stronger.”
Di’Shon Bernard is such an important member of the Sheffield Wednesday backline and his leading influence on the team will be a big miss heading into some crucial matches.
The defender had been beginning to show why he had started his career at Chelsea and Manchester United, transitioning into Championship life with ease after contributing to the club gaining promotion out of League One and helping them stay in the second tier last term.
Favoured heavily under Rohl, Wednesday will have to come up with solutions to deal with such a big absence, with home games against Coventry City and Sunderland to come, as well as a trip to Burnley.
This has made the Owls’ chances of promotion slimmer with the defense weakened, but the group must stand strong and show a resolute edge in order to stay towards the top end of the division.
