With the return of Premier League action still just over 50 days away, the Euros is drawing the attention of most football fans, with the competition now reaching the knockout stages.

There have been mixed fortunes for some of Liverpool’s star men, with Trent Alexander-Arnold dropped from the centre of England’s midfield after two games. Gareth Southgate’s side have been woefully short of creativity and have scored just twice in the competition.

Forward Cody Gakpo has been one of the brighter lights in an inconsistent Dutch side, regularly threatening opposition defences from the left wing. Reds captain Virgil van Dijk has been a lightning rod for criticism in the Netherlands, with legendary striker Marco van Basten amongst those to voice their displeasure at his leadership and performances.

Back in Merseyside, transfer rumours continue to spread. According to Crystal Palace fan media site The Palace Way, contact has been made between LFC and representatives of Eagles star Eberechi Eze, who is believed to have a release clause of around £60 million.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked the Liverpool Echo’s LFC correspondent Paul Gorst for his take on the Eze links.

“THE INTEREST IS HIGH” – Italian journalist discusses Liverpool target Riccardo Calafiori

Paul said:

“It’s a very exciting link, isn’t it? When I saw it yesterday, I sat up and thought, ‘Yeah, this is one I can get on board with.’

“Every time I watch him play at Palace, he just looks so silky, smooth – he progresses the ball really well, doesn’t he? [He] can play centrally, he can play wide. He’s obviously with England at the moment.

“There’s a lot about it that I like – the idea of him playing for Liverpool for the next five years excites me. It was one that made me sit up and take note.

“Liverpool aren’t briefing to The Palace Way – with respect – so it’s not from Liverpool’s end. Are Palace giving that information to this particular site? Maybe, we don’t know. This particular site has got one or two things right with regards to Palace.

“The profile of the player playing a little bit further down the Premier League, possibly having a release clause in his contract – a player who’s possibly on the cusp of taking another step forward. There are a lot of boxes being ticked there that sound like Liverpool deals.

“It’s an exciting one. I hope it’s true. I’m hoping to get a little bit more light on that particular one today. It’s an interesting one.”

Redmen Reacts

Eberechi Eze – hailed as ‘unique’ by Rio Ferdinand this year – has been an impressive performer for the past few seasons, despite his side playing some extremely uninspiring football under Roy Hodgson. New boss Oliver Glasner managed to get the best out of Eze and Bayern Munich-bound Michael Olise, with Palace being amongst the form teams at the end of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. Eze’s form secured him a place in England’s Euros squad, and he appears to have the quality necessary to play at a high level. If the rumours over his release clause are correct, that also removes the prospect of a long-winded negotiation over a fee. The main doubts over the 25-year-old’s suitability as a Liverpool player stem from his chequered injury history. With fans wary following repeated issues with players such as Diogo Jota and Thiago, would the LFC transfer committee prefer a slightly more robust attacker?
