“Valued At Liverpool…” – Paul Gorst On Links To ‘Tireless’ Bundesliga Star | OneFootball

After a tough 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace last Saturday, Liverpool have been able to enjoy this week’s international break perched at the top of the Premier League table.

With the notable exception of the poor home defeat to Nottingham Forest, Arne Slot’s side have a perfect record in all competitions. Victory over Palace means that Slot has the best record after ten games of any manager in Liverpool’s 132-year history.

However, it is off-field issues that may be causing the new head coach some grief. Contract extensions for key men Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah are yet to be signed. Salah made headlines with his comments following the 3-0 victory over Manchester United in September, with the 32-year-old stating the fixture ‘could be the last time’ he plays at Old Trafford in a red shirt.

If Mo is to depart at the end of the season, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg is suggesting it could be a case of ‘one in, one out’ at Anfield when it comes to Egyptian attackers. He believes LFC are targeting Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush as a ‘potential successor’ to Salah.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked the Liverpool Echo’s LFC correspondent Paul Gorst for his thoughts on the Marmoush links.

Paul said:

“You can link Liverpool to the most well-performing players in Europe, and they will be looking. How intensely they are looking, really, is always where the grey area comes from.

“Marmoush by all accounts is someone who can play in a handful of positions, which is always valued at Liverpool, but it does feel like Slot has two players for every role, so it’s Chiesa and Salah, Gakpo and Diaz, and then Núñez and Jota.

“I can’t see Liverpool signing him without anyone leaving, but if you ask me for my opinion, I’m starting to think that Liverpool are in need of a number nine, a dyed-in-the-wool centre-forward.

“Maybe I’m proven wrong on this, but it just feels like Darwin Núñez is someone who is out of sync with the football that they’re looking to play now.

“The chances are drying up for him, and then that’s where you’re starting to say, ‘What else is he bringing to the table?’

“It’s early doors at the moment, but ten games in, I’m not seeing loads of opportunities for Darwin Núñez, so, personally, for me, I think Liverpool should be looking for what is around the number nine situation.

“One of the issues for offloading Núñez would be that it would be an admission of failure. You’ve committed to what could be a club record fee, and then it hasn’t quite worked out and you’ve moved on.

He joined Eintracht Frankfurt at the start of last season. In 41 appearances, he scored 17 times, 12 of which were in the Bundesliga, making him the third-highest African scorer in the league.

The 25-year-old has started this season where he left off the last. Indeed, he is the top scorer in the Bundesliga. On Sunday, October 6, he bagged a brace at home to Bayern Munich, the second of which was a 94th-minute equaliser.

Marmoush plays on the opposite wing to Mohamed Salah for the Egypt national team. He has scored six in 32 Egyptian caps, including on his debut – the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Libya.

With so many moving parts to the deal, it is difficult to predict whether Liverpool’s interest in Omar Marmoush – hailed as ‘tireless’ previously – is concrete, or merely paper talk. With six quality attackers at the club already, one would have to depart before any significant outlay on a new signing. Replacing Mo Salah with anyone at the end of the season would be a controversial move, with most Reds fans confident that the Egyptian King’s reign can continue for at least another season or two. It is interesting that Paul brings Darwin Núñez into the conversation as a potential outgoing player. The 25-year-old has struggled for game time under Arne Slot, despite summer reassurances that he was very much a part of the new head coach’s plans. With fixtures beginning to pile up, perhaps he will find himself a place in the side over the coming weeks. Another inconsistent season could spell the end for the talented but frustrating Uruguayan.
