Manchester United are scouring the market for a suitable midfield addition to bolster Ruben Amorim’s options in 2025.
Reinforcements will undoubtedly be necessary in the summer when the club bids farewell to Christian Eriksen; his contract expires in June and INEOS are unwilling to offer the 32-year-old fresh terms.
It also remains to be seen where Casemiro’s future lies. The veteran is tied to Old Trafford until 2026, but his extortionate £350,000-a-week wages means United will struggle to find any suitors to take him off their hands, especially given that he’s now well past his peak and just a squad player for Amorim.
In terms of the options transfer chiefs may look to bring in, they’ve recently added one name to the shortlist in the form of Ederson. United and Atalanta will have built a strong relationship through their exchanges for Rasmus Hojlund (2023) and Amad Diallo (2021), so hashing out a deal for the midfielder may be relatively straightforward.

Florian Plettenberg claims that some senior figures in M16 are ‘fully convinced’ of Ederson’s abilities. However, there is not yet a ‘complete consensus within the club’, meaning there have been no ‘concrete negotiations’ held at this stage.
United have scouted him on numerous occasions – as have rivals Liverpool, with their scouts once reportedly left ‘shocked’ after watching the 25-year-old in action.
The Serie A leaders value their star in the region of €50-60 million, and he has three years remaining on his contract in Bergamo. Their scintillating start to the campaign, in which Ederson has started 15 of their 16 league matches played, has presumably made them rule out the prospect of a mid-season sale – not that United have the funds to facilitate one!
