Now growing increasingly desperate to offload fringe players before the transfer deadline, Manchester United have put forth the prospect of one Red returning to where it all began.

Indeed, the Red Devils have reportedly broached Ajax to discuss the possibility of them re-signing Christian Eriksen, who kickstarted his senior career in Amsterdam back in 2010; he joined the youth setup aged 16 in 2008 before making his debut two years later.

United value the ‘creative spark’ at only £5 million, which would mark a profit for the club given that they signed him as a free agent following his Brentford release in 2022.

Eriksen, 32, proceeded to play an integral role in both his and Erik ten Hag’s maiden season at Old Trafford, making 37 starts in all competitions while also navigating a lengthy setback due to a knee injury from February to April.

However, the following term saw the Dane forced to adjust to a reduced role. In 2023/2024, he was awarded a mere 14 starts in total, primarily because of Kobbie Mainoo’s scintillating emergence to the first team combined with Scott McTominay’s goalscoring heroics.

His veteran counterpart, Casemiro, kept his place in the 11, and Eriksen is yet to feature since United’s return to action in 2024/2025.

Ajax rebuff proposal of Eriksen reunion

According to a brand-new update from The Athletic this morning, Ajax are unlikely to take up the Reds on their proposal of an ‘emotional full circle’ with the experienced midfielder, as they, too, are focusing on sanctioning sales in order to balance the books.

As it stands, there is ‘no expectation’ of a move for Eriksen.
