Manchester United have joined Chelsea and Newcastle United in the race to sign one of Borussia Dortmund’s best midfielders, according to BILD.

The Red Devils had a huge spending spree during the summer transfer window. They made five high-profile signings with much of the focus on the defence.

Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro were signed to reinforce the backline, while Joshua Zirkzee was recruited to provide competition up front.

Manuel Ugarte was the club’s final summer acquisition. The midfielder made a slow start but has had a bigger influence since manager Erik ten Hag’s dismissal.

United are reportedly eyeing another midfield signing and could compete with Chelsea and Newcastle for Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha.

Nmecha had an average debut season with Dortmund, but he has stepped up this campaign. His ‘sensational development’ has grabbed attention from England.

The German was signed for £25 million from Wolfsburg and it would require an ‘immoral offer’ to persuade Dortmund to part ways with him.

United aiming to add more quality to their midfield

The 24-year-old has operated from the central and defensive midfield positions this term. He has been impressive with five goal contributions in 18 appearances.

The Manchester City graduate has also caught the eye with his distribution. He has in-and-out of the starting XI but has completed 88 percent of his passes with almost three long balls on average.

Nmecha has won almost 60% of his duels with three recoveries per outing. He could be a quality candidate to compete with Ugarte for the number six role.

Casemiro is no longer in the prime of his career. The Red Devils could opt to offload the ex-Real Madrid man next summer when he enters the last year of his deal.

Dortmund are in a strong position to negotiate with another three-and-a-half years left on Nmecha’s contract and could easily demand £50m for his transfer.

United are no strangers to spending big on quality talent. The 24-year-old has plenty of room to develop and could be signed if Ruben Amorim likes his profile.
