András Schafer (25) has saved his youth club, Haladas, who needed to raise €120,000 before the turn of the year to save the former European Cup participation from bankruptcy. Based in the Hungarian’s hometown of Szombathely, Haladas called for donations from supporters, which resulted in Schafer making two donations.
The Union Berlin midfielder first donated €12,000, per kicker, but the club were still €24,000 of their target, resulting in Schafer making a second donation. The Hungarian played for Haladas’ youth teams between 2010 and 2014 and was joined by other former players in donating.
Schafer moved to Union from Slovakian side Dunajska Streda for €1m in January 2022, and has since played 67 games across all competitions for Die Eisernen. The 25-year-old has played 13 games in the Bundesliga this season under Bo Svensson, who has since been replaced by Steffen Baumgart.
