Hamburger SV striker Davie Selke might be set to move to his fifth Bundesliga club. Having already played for RB Leipzig, Werder Bremen, Hertha BSC, and FC Köln, Selke may be headed to Union Berlin next season. The once highly promising German youth international and DFB Olympic representative helped HSV achieve promotion with an incredible 22-goal-season in the 2. Bundesliga.
HSV contract extension negotiations have nevertheless stalled. Sport Bild and Sky Germany report that Selke’s current club have offered him a two-year-deal with an extension option and an annual salary of around €1.8m. The 30-year-old wants a guaranteed three-year-contract and a much higher salary. Selke remains available to all clubs on a free due to the fact that his HSV contract expires at the end-of-the-month.
A move to Union Berlin would make a great deal of sense as Selke served under current FCU head coach Steffen Baumgart in both Hamburg and Köln. Baumgart’s Eisernen desperately seek attacking assistance amid departure rumors swirling around leading goal-scorer Benedict Hollerbach.
The services of Scottish striker Oliver Burke have been secured and the Köpenickers are reportedly also interested in permanently acquiring Serbian forward Andrej Ilic. Union will still need to sign at least one more striker this summer.
Union have already done some work to shore up the attack in the current transfer market, surprisingly signing VfB Stuttgart loanee Woo-Yeong Jeong permanently yesterday. The South Korean attacking midfielder struggled with injury this season and was rarely fit enough for the starting XI.
Jeong’s three goals and two assists in 23 league appearances this season nevertheless left the capital city side feeling as the former Bayern and Freiburg man was worth a reported €4m. Jeong signed a one-year-deal to remain in Köpenick.
“Woo-Yeong showed in his first season how valuable he can be to our team with his style-of-play,” FCU managing director Horst Heldt remarked in a statement yesterday. “We are convinced that he will continue to perform at this level after his return [from injury].“
“I felt very comfortable here from day one,” the 22-times-capped Taeguk international himself added. “The support of the fans, the trust of the coaching team and the special atmosphere in the team meant a lot to me.”
