As reported by Kicker, VfL Bochum could be awarded their first three points of the season thanks to a Union Berlin fan’s actions.

Last weekend, Bochum put in a heroic effort to draw 1-1 at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei having played the vast majority of the game with ten men.

However, the biggest talking point of the game was when a home fan threw a lighter towards Bochum goalkeeper Patrick Drewes.

The incident led to a 30-minute delay in play and protests from the away side. After some discussion, Bochum begrudgingly played out the rest of the match.

Bochum have now filed a complaint to the DFB asking for the game to be overturned and all three points awarded to them.

Speaking to WAZ this week, Bochum head coach Dieter Hecking explained:

“It’s been extreme in the last two days, what’s happened to him on social media, who’s made comments and how they’ve been made, there’s been a lot of discussion about him. I think a lot of people underestimate what happened to him mentally after the lighter was thrown and in the aftermath.”

Drewes has been given the week to mentally recover and is expected to be fully integrated back into team training later this week.

Union have banned players from speaking to the media this week whilst the club themselves have until Thursday to respond to the DFB.

Should the DFB side with Bochum, the club will be awarded all three points which would be their first ‘victory’ of the season.
