Vitor Reis could yet be joined by two further Manchester City starlets this summer as Hugo Viana looks to trim Pep Guardiola’s squad in time for the new campaign.
Pep Guardiola is keen for Manchester City’s first-team squad to be trimmed further before the September 1 transfer deadline as the Blues prepare for their 2025-26 Premier League opener against Wolves on Saturday.
City have signed Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Sverre Nypan and James Trafford this summer, with each of Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Scott Carson shown the door in what has been a major squad overhaul.
Hugo Viana has replaced long-serving Txiki Begiristain as director of football, with the Manchester City board looking to trim the wage bill and streamline Guardiola’s bloated squad after a flurry of new arrivals – to challenge on all fronts after a sub-standard 2024-25 campaign.
James McAtee, Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips were all left out of Manchester City’s travelling squad for their weekend pre-season win over Palermo, with the English trio expected to find new clubs before the transfer deadline.
City are also expecting to field offers for Stefan Ortega Moreno, who is set to seek a permanent move away to secure his place as Germany’s number one ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the arrival of James Trafford from Burnley.
Central defence was an area where Manchester City were stocked perhaps too well as of last week, with January signing Vitor Reis since completing a season-long loan move to CFG-owned Girona.
John Stones is expecting to stay put as he enters the final year of his contract, with Ederson also in line to be allowed to begin the new season as Manchester City’s number one amid long-standing interest in the 31-year-old Brazilian from Saudi Arabia.
Claudio Echeverri, signed from River Plate in January 2024 and welcomed to Manchester this year, would also benefit from a season-long loan to progress his development, with AS Roma believed to be the 19-year-old’s preferred destination despite City’s desire to link him with Reis at Girona.
According to Mirror Sport’s Simon Mullock, Viana is ‘progressing’ loan deals for Claudio Echeverri and Nypan, with Girona interested in the duo in addition to the recently-signed Reis on a temporary deal.
It remains to be seen whether loan deals for either of the pair materialise in the coming weeks as Manchester City face a tricky run of fixtures to begin the new Premier League campaign, coming up against each of Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United in their opening five league games.
Elsewhere, Tottenham are in talks with Manchester City over a deal for Savinho, with the 21-year-old winger open to moving to north London, which could see the Blues short of one attacker when the window closes on September 1.
