Manchester City’s EDS side (Elite Development Squad) created history last night. They claimed their fourth PL2 title yesterday with a 2-nil win over Southampton in the PL2 playoff final. The win caps off a spectacular season for the Manchester City EDS side. There have been a host of standout performers for City’s EDS side this season. Divin Mubama finished as their top-scorer for this season with 16 goals in 13 games. Jahmai Simpson-Pusey won the PL2 Player of the Year award. Across this season two electrifying wingers also caught the eye. They were Emilio Lawrence and Ryan McAidoo. Both players appear to have bright futures ahead of them in the game.
Young winger Emilio Lawrence has impressed all season long for Manchester City’s EDS side. In 20 appearances he scored 7 goals and added 7 assists. Lawrence played primarily on the left wing for City’s EDS side. What stood out across this season is his eye for a defence-splitting pass and his ability to chip in with a goal. Lawrence is also adept at playing in tight spaces and that’s an attribute that does fit in at Manchester City. The former Everton academy star has had an impressive campaign for Manchester City’s EDS side which shows he can potentially develop into a quality player in time.
Another winger who impressed across Manchester City’s youth sides is young winger Ryan McAidoo. McAidoo arrived in City’s youth set-up last summer after completing a move from Chelsea to Manchester City. This season he has shared duties across Manchester City’s EDS and under-18 sides. In 42 appearances for both teams, he scored 16 goals and added 7 assists. He played primarily on the right wing, although he can operate on the left or through the middle of required.
But what stood out in McAidoo’s play is his prodigious talent. McAidoo is an electrifying winger with an eye for goal. He arrived at Manchester City as a potential star of the future. Across this season he showed all of the makings of such a player. His dribbling ability is a sight to behold, and he can also link up the play well and pick out a pass. McAidoo is only 16 years of age, but based on his performances this season, anything is possible for the young winger.
Manchester City’s youth system is stocked with elite young talent. Stephen Mfuni looks to be a centre-back who is destined for the top. Divine Mukasa is another player who appears set for big things. Emilio Lawrence and Ryan McAidoo are just two more examples of the talent that Manchester City has throughout its youth system. Both players have had good seasons and they are players to keep an eye on for the future.
