Borussia Dortmund extend Mike Tullberg's interim spell in charge

Tullberg was in charge at Signal Iduna Park for the team's Matchday 19 fixture against Werder Bremen last Saturday, having assumed the reins after the sacking of Nuri Şahin on 22 January. He had previously been confirmed as continuing in the role for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk, and he will now also be on the bench for the Matchday 20 trip to the Voith-Arena.

"We are taking the necessary time," said Dortmund's managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, in reference to making a full-time appointment. “I think we are currently in an excellent position with Mike because he connects with the players.”

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said Tullberg had the club's "complete confidence" until a decision was made.

Watch: Who is Mike Tullberg?

For his first game in charge, the long-time Dortmund U19s coach oversaw a 2-2 home draw against Bremen in which his side shrugged off an early red card for Nico Schlotterbeck.

They stormed to a 2-0 lead with ten men thanks to a first-half goal from Serhou Guirassy, who then forced an own-goal from Marco Friedl after the Bremen captain had attempted to block the Dortmund forward's shot. However, their lead was undone by two former Dortmund men: first, a Leonardo Bittencourt screamer lifted the visitors, who then equalised through Marvin Ducksch just minutes later.

Watch: Dortmund are pegged back by Bremen

Shortly after the match, Dortmund confirmed that Tullberg would reassume control from the sidelines for Wednesday's final league phase fixture in the Champions League.

"That was actually already clear beforehand," said Ricken. "But I told him that it was all about the Bremen game first, because I wanted Mike Tullberg one hundred percent - and that what we got.”
