German giants Bayern Munich tried to hijack Chelsea’s move for Jamie Gittens according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues finally reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund for Gittens on Saturday, thought to be worth £55m including add-ons.

Gittens is thought to have already completed the main part of his medical, and the England under-21 international will sign a seven year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Bayern Munich tried to hijack Gittens deal

Chelsea made it clear Gittens was their priority on the left wing and they will be pleased to have landed a top target.

The Blues are short on the left due to the departure of Jadon Sancho and the suspension of Mykhailo Mudryk, and Gittens gives Enzo Maresca a much needed option.

The 20-year-old in theory is a perfect fit for Maresca’s system, but it will take him time to adapt to both the Premier League and the Italian’s style of football.

The Englishman made it clear he only wanted Chelsea, despite reported interest from Bayern, and Romano has revealed the German champions tried to hijack the deal.

“Bayern Munich really tried to offer important money for Jamie Gittens and hijack the Chelsea deal, but the player wanted Chelsea only,” he told his YouTube channel.

Gittens can’t feature for Chelsea at the Club World Cup, so supporters will likely get their first glimpse of him against Bayer Leverkusen or AC Milan at the start of August at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea step up Joao Pedro pursuit

With Delap and Gittens through the door Chelsea have turned their attention to signing a versatile forward, with Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix set to leave.

The Blues have identified Joao Pedro as a target, but face competition from Newcastle for the 23-year-old Brazilian.
