Burnley and Manchester City have today announced the completion of a permanent transfer for James Trafford from the Etihad Stadium to Turf Moor.

The 20-year-old England youth international goalkeeper reaches the heights of Premier League football following a successful season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, producing 26 clean sheets across 52 appearances in all competitions.

Having risen through Manchester City’s academy ranks earlier in his young career, Trafford has certainly made his name as one of the most exciting young goalkeeping talents in English football, with expectations of reaching Gareth Southgate’s senior squad later down the line.

Despite having not registered a single minute of senior action under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, the transfer fee paid by Burnley for the shot-stopper is a representation of the high-regard in which Trafford is held throughout the game.

James Trafford – who originally joined Manchester City as a 12-year-old from Carlisle United – is currently away on international duty with England’s under-21s, where he has kept clean sheets in all of his first four starts and 90 minutes en route to the semi-final stage.

What are the terms of the James Trafford to Burnley deal?

James Trafford has joined Burnley in an initial £15 million deal, potentially rising to £19 million depending on the achievement of performance-related and success-based add-ons.

Manchester City have also included a 20% sell-on clause, and a buy-back option.

What clauses have Manchester City included in the deal with Burnley?

Manchester City have a buy-back clause worth triple the fee that Burnley have initially paid, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What has James Trafford said upon leaving City and joining Burnley?

“I feel very happy to officially be a Burnley player, I was excited for it to all get done whilst the Euros was going on, I knew a lot about it and I was waiting to get back to make it all official really.

“I want to improve and learn as much as I can here and as a team, I just want to take it a day at a time and try and achieve as much as we can going forward.”

Who else was interested in James Trafford this summer?

Leicester City were linked with a move for James Trafford, whilst Scottish Premier League giants Rangers were also claimed to be a potential suitor earlier on in the summer transfer window.

How have Burnley reacted to their new signing?

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany said, “We’ve signed an extremely talented young man. More than just a talent he’s a great character.

“James is a very impressive, confident mature young man. Most people have seen what he’s achieved in his career so far and his level of talent.

“We’re looking forward to developing that even further. Making him even better. He’s done so much all ready and what excites us is how far he can go.”
