Tottenham Hotspur have made a late move to sign Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji as the transfer deadline approaches.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have contacted City over the Switzerland international, who is valued at around £15 million.

The London club are keen to strengthen their defensive options after a busy summer in the transfer market.

Xavi Simons is close to completing his switch from RB Leipzig this week in a £60 million deal, giving manager Thomas Frank a boost in midfield.

Tottenham had also pushed for Savinho but were unwilling to meet City’s £70 million asking price.

Attention has now turned back to the back line, where Frank wants greater depth to cover a long season ahead.

Akanji is one of three centre-backs on Tottenham’s shortlist, although they face competition from AC Milan and Crystal Palace.

Milan have already discussed terms with City, but talks over personal terms remain unresolved.

Palace also expressed interest, while Galatasaray had previously agreed a deal only for the player to delay a decision.

The 30-year-old is believed to prefer playing in the Champions League, which gives Spurs an advantage over their rivals.

Akanji has not featured for Pep Guardiola’s side in the Premier League this season despite being a key figure in last year’s turbulent campaign.

He made 26 league appearances, playing through injury problems. He earned praise for his resilience and tactical flexibility.

City’s defensive rebuild this summer has pushed him down the pecking order, with other players preferred to play in his position.

That situation has left the Swiss international weighing up his future and open to a new challenge.

Tottenham’s defensive ranks have been stretched in recent weeks, and the manager has made it clear he only wants players who are committed to joining.

Akanji fits that profile, and Spurs are now working quickly to see if a deal can be completed before the transfer deadline.
