Former Roma and Italy striker Luca Toni has explained why his former boss Claudio Ranieri makes a perfect fit for the Giallorossi in their current situation, hinting at his peacekeeping abilities and his tendency to win over the fanbase wherever he goes.
Ranieri was officially appointed as head coach of the Giallorossi until the end of the 2024-25 season, at which point he will then step into an advisory role behind the scenes.
Roma are now onto their third coach of the season and their fourth of the calendar year following the dismissals of Jose Mourinho, Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric.
Ranieri has already overseen his first training session at Trigoria, and Toni can imagine the sort of speech the coach would have given to break the ice.
“He would have gone into the dressing room and made light of the situation by making a joke,” Toni told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Something along the lines of ‘I’m nearly retired, don’t let me make a fool of myself now’.”

Toni was coached by Ranieri at Roma back in 2010. And from their time together more than a decade ago, the former Italy international knows that his former boss is the right man at the right time for Roma.
“He’s a great psychologist as well as being a great coach,” Toni added. “He’s the right man for today’s Roma.”
Toni went on to explain why winning over the supporters at the Stadio Olimpico will be paramount for the 73-year-old coach.
“The Romanisti support is special, and Roma cannot play without the support of its people. Mourinho achieved lots of results thanks to the sold-out Olimpico, the same with De Rossi. It was like that in out 2010 triumph.
“Ranieri loves Roma and is loved by the fans as well. His return will bring peace. It could have been similar if they reinstated De Rossi, but the relationship with the owners is probably broken.
“Ranieri is the right man in this situation, but he alone will not be enough to get them back up to the top.”
