Former FC Köln goalkeeper Timo Horn simply can’t seem to stabilise his Bundesliga rollercoaster ride. The current VfL Bochum No. 1 – one week removed from an embarrassing error that cost his team a league fixture – has now gone from zero to hero after Bochum’s historic win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Horn helped Bochum secure the upset with massive saves against Eric Dier and Jamal Musiala. With some help from the post, the 31-year-old was spared a converted Serge Gnabry penalty that could have swung the match. A combination of luck and skill helped write another chapter in Horn’s sensational story since he returned to the Bundesliga four matchdays ago.
VfL Bochum head coach Dieter Hecking’s decision to appoint Horn the club’s No. 11 and stick with him after last week’s mistake has paid off. Since the turn of the calendar year, the relegation-threatened Revierklub have battled back to draw RB Leipzig, upset Dortmund without some of their best players, gained two points administratively, and now knocked off the mighty German giants.
All of that adds up 12 most unexpected league points. Commenting on the three points secured Saturday, Horn remained a little too excited to engage in the such arithmetic. For the written-off keeper – whose previous best experience at the Allianz was a draw against the record champions during the Wiesnzeit – it was good enough to triple the day’s points tally and add a little extra.
“I once managed a 1-1 [here in Munich], after which we went to the Oktoberfest,” Horn told Sky Germany. “That already felt like a victory. But today, of course, it’s indescribable. It feels like ten points, even if it’s only three.”
