We are approaching Serie A matchday 29, when the Rossoneri will take on Como at San Siro. After the 2-1 win in the first meeting this season, it's time to look back at a Lombardy derby that hasn't been played by AC Milan since the 2002/03 season. It's a clash which was written many interesting pages in the history books; let's take a look back at one particular game, the AC Milan 4-0 win in January 1989, on the dawn of an historic year for our club.
It was a strangely difficult period for Sacchi's AC Milan side, who came off the back of a defeat to Cesena and having gained four points in their last seven games. In the fog at San Siro, the team found their form again and won convincingly by four goals. Van Basten and Gullit started up front and worked together to get the first goal after just three minutes: Ruud played in Marco who headed it in, anticipating Paradisi as he tried to get close. A recovering AC Milan headed into the break one goal ahead. The spirit changed in the second half, more in terms of the atmosphere than the scoreline.
The fog eased at San Siro, but the match did not stop and nor did AC Milan, who doubled their lead after 15 minutes of play through Gullit. Ruud received the ball from Baresi and shot powerfully past Paradisi. Another 15 minutes passed and the referee awarded a penalty for a hand ball: Virdis converted from the spot to make it three. In the 79th minute, Maccoppi scored an own goal to make the final result AC Milan 4-0 Como. It was an important win for a side who, just months later, would go on to lift the European Cup in Barcelona.
