San Mamés is set to be crowded for this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League final after the first lot of tickets sold out in less than an hour.
The first 18,000 tickets for the most important match in Europe were released on Friday, in celebration of International Women’s Day. They had already sold out less than 30 minutes later.
The website to buy tickets started working minutes before the expected time, which frustrated some fans in the virtual queue.
The clock was approaching 12pm CET, the scheduled time to start vending, but it was impossible to buy Category 1 (€25) and Prime (€45) passes. After a few minutes, Category 2 (€20) tickets were also no longer available. At 12:15pm, the same happened with Category 3 (€15) — a rapid sellout of the first tickets for the Bilbao final on May 25th.
For those who were unlucky on Friday, UEFA will release more Champions League final tickets in the coming weeks. As soon as both finalists are known, the two clubs will also release tickets reserved for them by UEFA.
Most of the people who purchased the first 18,000 tickets are Barcelona supporters. They will be hoping to win a third Champions League title in their own country, and they just have a six hour drive from Barcelona to Bilbao. If the reigning champions reach the final, San Mamés will be packed with the familiar red and blue of Barça.
Last year, the PSV Eindhoven Stadion hosted 33,147 spectators. A lot of people were unable to attend as the stadium was too small for such a grand event. However, San Mamés is a significantly bigger venue, with a capacity for 53,331 people.
A sold-out San Mamés could break the current record attendance for a UWCL final, which was set back in 2012. A total of 50,212 supporters watched Olympique Lyonnais beat 1. FFC Frankfurt at the Olympiastadion in Munich.
