The first of the big Newcastle United announcements of the summer is eagerly awaited.
Fans desperately hoping for the first summer 2025 stellar signing to be made public.
Newcastle United supporters wanting that excitement of a new quality player arriving at St James’ Park.
This would also be a reassuring moment for fans, that the club is continuing to move forward with ambition. Building on a quite magnificent 2024/25 season.
For me, there is one deal above all others that I am desperately hoping for ASAP.
If Newcastle United can pull it off then for sure it will be easily the biggest success of the summer.
I am of course talking about….Alexander Isak.
If/when Newcastle United announce a new extended and enhanced contract for our striker from Sweden, then I will be a very happy man.
This is for a number of reasons.
For starters, put it this way, Newcastle United won’t be signing a better player than Alexander Isak this summer. We can always hope that this will be the case but what a top quality player AND goalscorer(!) Isak is.
United have other excellent players and Sandro Tonali probably the pick of them, but a quality goalscoring striker is pretty much priceless. Just ask Arsenal.
The thing is, Alexander Isak signing a new extended contract and committing to Newcastle United would send out a huge message. The striker coveted by pretty much every other major club, telling everyone that he believes he can achieve his ambitions by staying on Tyneside.
Getting this biggest deal of the summer done early would also of course be telling any potential quality signing that Newcastle United are very much worth considering as a destination. The very opposite of what would be the case if Alexander Isak left at this moment in time.
Winning a trophy and qualifying for a second time in three seasons for the Champions League, by some distance in the top four Premier League clubs when it comes to points accumulated these last three and a half seasons. Whisper it quietly but United are surely now in danger of being seen as very much an established club towards the top end.
As we all know, this past season of success was due to keeping our best players. All of the squad contributed but I would say for sure, for example, that Newcastle United wouldn’t have picked up a trophy, nor qualified for Champions League, if one or more of Isak, Tonali and Bruno hadn’t still been at St James’ Park and playing regularly.
The challenge now is of course to increase the group of real quality players at Newcastle United. Having done the necessary expensive (by previous NUFC levels) investment in the squad to prevent relegation and then build from there (after a decade and a half of nothingness, at best, under Mike Ashley), we then found the past three transfer windows as ones where PSR caught up with United and new first team contenders couldn’t be added.
This summer the sands have shifted and the financial/PSR outlook is far healthier, with realistic hopes of at least two or three real quality players to be added this summer.
There is no panic on Alexander Isak if a new extended contract didn’t happen this summer, as he still has three years left on the current one. However, reality is that now has come the time for Newcastle United to properly reward Alexander Isak for what he has given us, to make him easily NUFC’s biggest earner, use a sizeable chunk of the available money to enhance his contract and show him how valued he is.
Even with that, we all know that Alexander Isak could earn significantly more elsewhere, however, if Newcastle United can go a decent part of the way towards those kind of levels of pay, then I am very confident that the striker will be happy to agree a new deal, to send out that message he is here to stay at St James’ Park and others should come and join him, Tonali, Bruno, Hall, Botman, Livramento, Gordon, Joelinton…
So come on Newcastle United, make this the priority and get it done early.
Alexander Isak committing to NUFC and building on this past breakthrough season, with the trophy monkey now off our backs. A club that means business and has the confidence to attack on all fronts now, including the Champions League.
