You ‘might’ have noticed a ‘little’ bit of speculation regarding Anthony Gordon recently.

No, I am not talking about whether or not he will get another minute on the pitch for England out in Germany.

I am of course talking about transfer speculation regarding Anthony Gordon.

This all really came to a head when it was revealed that amongst the many conversations Newcastle United had been having with various clubs to ensure they kept the right side of PSR by 30 June 2024, these conversations had included one with Liverpool.

Exactly why Newcastle United had allowed this short-term problem to go so close to the wire I have absolutely no idea. However, clearly the Newcastle United owners and senior staff were covering all bases/options, in talking to numerous clubs about numerous NUFC players.

From everything I have read, a lot of these conversations were very informal and very loose, a case of ‘what if…’ their preferred deals didn’t happen, then a case of having to press the nuclear option button and sell a star player to avoid breaking PSR and then getting into a potential spiral of points deductions and so on.

Quite obviously, the Newcastle United owners were not in any way wanting to sell any first-team player, never mind one of the very biggest assets such as Anthony Gordon. In the end it was squad players Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson who were sold for a reported combined £68m, which more than satisfied the short-term £50m+ shortfall that needed to be covered for PSR purposes by 30 June 2024.

The fact that this was what actually happened and the short-term issue was covered by the sale of two young squad players, that has of course not stopped the media speculation.

Indeed, it has only gotten even worse.

Apparently Anthony Gordon mentioning he liked tomato sauce the other day, means absolute proof that he is going to go on strike unless he is allowed to sign for Liverpool.

By the way, that didn’t happen, or at least I don’t think so! However, there is so much nonsense currently generated by the media especially on Anthony Gordon, that this tomato sauce (source?) tale may turn up elsewhere as an Anthony Gordon transfer exclusive!!

With the daily/hourly made-up nonsense that continues on Anthony Gordon going supposedly to Liverpool, or now Manchester City apparently, no doubt yet another invented angle on this tale, as even the media get tired of repeating exactly the same made up nonsense.

I have to laugh when these ‘exclusives’ talk about Anthony Gordon getting sold for £70m.

How does that work???

Newcastle United committed to paying £45m for him when he was just a 21 year old with potential who had managed basically not much more than a relative handful of impressive Everton matches and a few goals.

Now Anthony Gordon is one of the best attacking players in the Premier League, was Newcastle’s player of the year, got Premier League double figures in both goals and assists last season, has been called up by and played for England, and is part of the Euros squad currently.

Yet Newcastle United would be prepared to sell him for just £25m profit when he only had potential???

I see Newcastle getting linked with West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen amid claims the Hammers would demand £100m minimum if they did ever sell him. Bowen is a very decent player but he turns 28 this year and as well as believing Anthony Gordon is better than Bowen, Gordon is also only 23.

To think the Newcastle United owners would let Anthony Gordon go for less than £100m is laughable, never mind £70m!

Then we have arguably the biggest joke.

I have no idea who came out with it first but I now read transfer ‘exclusive’ after transfer ‘exclusive’ claiming Anthony Gordon has less than two years of his Newcastle United contract remaining, ending 30 June 2026.

This just sums it up, the nonsense they come out with and that others just repeat and repeat.

How does that make any sense and what proof have they got of this 2026 contract claim?

Well, when Anthony Gordon signed for Newcastle United just over 17 months ago, it was the usual ‘undisclosed’ transfer fee and ‘long-term’ contract that was announced (see below).

No Premier League club spends so much money on a young player and then puts them on only a three-year contract. It is laughable.

So, the Newcastle United owners would approve a £45m spend on a player who hadn’t really achieved anything and was only potential, then put themselves in a position whereby after his first full season, the club was suddenly in a position where one of their biggest assets would now have less than two years left on his contract during that transfer window.

The norm now is a five-year contract as the very minimum, including to maximise amortisation positives, so at the very least I would say Anthony Gordon is contracted to Newcastle United until the end of June 2028.

It is ridiculous to suggest there is contract pressure on the Newcastle United owners with Anthony Gordon. They may well reward him with a new enhanced and possibly even longer contract BEYOND 2028, due to his progress and to extend his current deal even more.

However, there is absolutely no desperation to sort a new contract with him, due to fears of less than two years left currently, that is simply unimaginable.

These claims of a £70m sale and less than two years left on the Anthony Gordon contract are simply ridiculous, on a par with ongoing Bruno Guimaraes departure claims.

So we are supposed to believe that clubs that didn’t try to take advantage of Bruno’s £100m release clause in June 2024, are now going to come and try to buy the midfielder for more than £100m??? As for sure there is absolutely no way the Newcastle United owners would entertain selling Bruno Guimaraes for less than over £100m, even if he decided he wanted to leave.

You can never say never but I am absolutely confident that Newcastle United will keep all their best players in this transfer window, especially Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.

Then even if for whatever reason one of this trio were sold, the bidding would have to start at £100m+.

Newcastle United official announcement – 29 January 2023:

‘Newcastle United are delighted to announce the signing of Anthony Gordon for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old winger joins the Magpies from Everton and has penned a long-term deal at St. James’ Park.

England Under-21 international Gordon becomes United’s first arrival of the January transfer window.

“Since I heard of the interest, I was always convinced Newcastle were for me,” Gordon told NUFC TV.

“I think the fan base and the city really suits me as a person, the way the team are playing under the gaffer at the minute really suits me, and the club just look like they’re heading in the right direction.

“I feel like it’s a really big step. People haven’t seen what I’m capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club’s going, I can really excel here.”

Head coach Eddie Howe added: “I’m delighted to sign Anthony – he’s a top, top talent.

“I’m really excited to work with him, to develop him, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in a Newcastle shirt.”

Anthony Gordon’s career

Born in Liverpool, Gordon spent time on the Reds’ books before joining city neighbours Everton at the age of 11. His first team debut came in a Europa League clash with Apollon Limassol in December 2017, before his impressive displays for the Toffees’ second string led to a Premier League debut as a substitute against West Ham in January 2020.

After a spell on loan at Championship side Preston North End during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign, Gordon returned to Goodison Park and established himself as a first team regular, being handed the number ten shirt at the start of this season. In total, he made 78 appearances for Everton, scoring seven goals.

Gordon – who was been capped by England at under-18, under-19 and under-20 level – currently has nine caps and four goals to his name for the Three Lions’ under-21 side.
