“This is the plan” – Enzo Maresca explains his idea to rotate in key position

We’re two competitive games in to Enzo Maresca’s reign as Chelsea boss, and already some questions are starting to be answered.

There’s been one Premier League game and one Conference League game, giving us an interesting chance to see how Maresca will balance the two. With so many players in the squad it seems that the Conference League is going to see heavily rotated teams in general, with 9 changes last night.

That may decline a little once the whole squad is up to full match fitness, and once we’re into the sharper end of the competition, but in general it seems we can expect a pretty steady change-up every week. That includes in goal, where last night Filip Jorgensen stepped in for Robert Sanchez, who had faced Man City.

Maresca reveals his goalkeeper plan

Asked about that dynamic after the game yesterday, Maresca revealed that the plan was to use Sanchez largely in the league and Jorgensen in all 3 cup competitions, giving them potentially a similar number of games through the season.

“This is in this moment the plan but the plan can change,” Maresca replied when asked about his plan in goal.

“I’ve said many times, I judge the players about the level [they are playing at]. So if the level continues to be the same then probably Robert will be Premier League and Filip in the Conference League or the cup that we have. But in the end, it is just about performance.”

He’s putting in a lot of caveats there though, and making it extra clear multiple times that it’s all about performance. We would think that without doubt the weaknesses shown by Sanchez playing with the ball will be considered pretty untenable by Maresca, and at the very least he will be looking to flip the two over at some point so Jorgensen is the league keeper and Sanchez takes the cups.
