Barcelona head coach Xavi has provided his take on what exactly culminated in his side being overthrown as champions of Spain this season.
Barca, of course, have endured something of a campaign to forget to date, surrendering their La Liga crown, as well as being ousted from both the Copa del Rey and Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
Speaking to the media in the aftermath of his side’s comfortable victory over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, the subject of precisely what he feels swung the pendulum back in favour of Real Madrid this season was in turn put to the aforementioned Xavi.
And the former midfielder’s ensuing response proved an interesting one.
Rather than point towards his side as having taken a step backwards, Xavi highlighted the considerable steps in the right direction taken by Real Madrid.
Adamant that the Blaugrana are now fighting against a ‘super team’, the 44-year-old explained:
“What changed this season was Real Madrid, They had a historic season. We’re playing against one of the best teams, the Champions League finalists. We’re competing against a super team.”
Xavi continued:
“Congratulations to Real Madrid on winning La Liga.”
