Amad Diallo was the hero as Manchester United beat Southampton on Thursday night with the winger scoring a 12-minute hat-trick at Old Trafford.
Diallo’s devastating performance turned defeat into victory for Ruben Amorim’s side, who trailed the struggling Saints with eight minutes to. After scoring an 82nd-minute equaliser, Diallo snatched the points with a second in the final minute of normal time. He completed his hat-trick in stoppage time to seal an unforgettable night for the Ivorian.
“Maybe one of the best weeks in my life. I am very happy for this win. This team deserved to win this game so I am very happy,” Diallo, who signed a new contract at Manchester United this week, reflected to TNT.
The winger’s hat-trick continued a coming-of-age campaign for Diallo. After several loan spells away from the club, he has broken into the team this season and shone. A shining light in an otherwise tough season for the Red Devils, the 22-year-old is now an integral part of the optimistic future under new head coach Amorim.
Diallo’s first Premier League hat-trick arrived at the age of 22, though he’s only the 59th-youngest player to have scored a treble in the division.
Michael Owen holds the record having netted his first Liverpool hat-trick against Sheffield Wednesday aged just 18 years and 62 days in 1998.
He’s one of four players to have scored a Premier League hat-trick aged 18 or under, alongside Robbie Fowler, Chris Bart-Williams and Evan Ferguson. Owen, however, scored three Premier League trebles before celebrating his 19th birthday.
There have been just nine instances of a teenager scoring a hat-trick in the Premier League.
