Despite Italy’s fight, a comprehensive display saw Spain claim a 3-1 victory over their opponents and the top spot in the Group B at the Euros.

Italy were first to hit the back of the net after a fast start left the World champions on the back foot. Capitalising on a rare Spanish blunder, Elisabetta Oliviero got herself in the prime position to fire home the opener.

However, the Italian euphoria was short lived as Spain quickly struck back. Goals from Athenea del Castillo, Patri Guijarro and Esther Gonzalez put the game to bed, securing Spain the top spot in Group B.

Here are five standout stars Spain have to thank…

Alexia Putellas

The midfield maestro continues to prove why her prime is really just her entire career. Poetic in possession, Alexia Putellas makes Spain look even better than they already are.

Her clever back-heel set up Spain’s equaliser and represented the free-flowing football Spain excel at. She is in pole position to clinch her third Ballon d’Or, and she continues to prove exactly why she is the pick of the bunch.

Patri Guijarro

Despite the fact that she plies her trade for both Spain and Barcelona, Patri still flies under the radar. The headstrong defensive midfielder steadies the ship for Spain, allowing those in front of her to create the magic.

Her ability to split lines with her incredible vision opens up channels for Spain, making it nearly impossible for any opposition to know which forward to track.

A stellar curling finish into the bottom right corner against Italy sums her up – cool, calm, and collected.

Esther Gonzalez

When fans were making their golden boot predictions, not many will have had Gonzalez as the frontrunner. The NJ/NY Gotham striker has been banging the goals in for Spain, hitting the scoresheet in every fixture so far.

She is physically dominant, technically gifted, while also being fast enough to blitz past defenders. Currently first in the golden boot charge at Women’s Euro 2025, it seems like there is no slowing her down.

Irene Paredes

Spain may have not felt her absence in the tournament opener as they flew past Portugal, but Irene Paredes’ impact was immediate upon her return.

Not only does the defensive talisman organise Spain at the back, but her goal against Belgium clearly shows what she can offer going forward too. Paredes plays with complete conviction, bringing confidence and charisma to this Spain outfit.

Adriana Nanclares

There were plenty of worried faces prior to the tournament as Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll was absent from training after coming down with tonsillitis. Heading into the campaign, the team’s back up options were not the most experienced on the international stage. However, Adriana Nanclares has now made sure that her name will be remembered with some fine performances.
