FLW spoke to Carlton Palmer to discuss Ruud van Nistelrooy's links with the vacant Burnley job

Burnley are still searching for a new manager after Vincent Kompany departed for Bayern Munich, and they've been linked with a move for former PSV Eindhoven boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

It's been reported that the former Dutch striker, along with former England internationals Frank Lampard and Scott Parker have held talks with the Clarets over a potential move to Turf Moor.

Meanwhile, journalist Sacha Tavolieri has reported that van Nistelrooy, along with West Brom boss Carlos Corberan are the front-runners for the Clarets job,

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf have reported that a deal for van Nistelrooy to take over at Burnley is close, but the Burnley Express have reported that is not the case.

Whether a deal is close or not, Burnley are certainly interested in the former Manchester United striker, and they'll want to make an appointment in the near future with pre-season just around the corner.

Former England international and current pundit Carlton Palmer believes that winning promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt will be a must for Burnley, and has concerns that van Nistelrooy doesn't have any previous experience of winning promotion on his CV.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer said: "Ruud van Nistelrooy, the legendary Manchester United forward, is believed to be in contention to become the next Burnley manager.

"Reports that he is about to be appointed to replace Vincent Kompany are way off the mark at the moment. I believe a lot of high-profile managers have been interviewed for the job along with Ruud.

“Names like Liam Rosenior, Frank Lampard and Kompany’s assistant Craig Bellamy have all been interviewed for the job.

“Since moving into coaching, van Nistelrooy has worked with the Netherlands national team and PSV Eindhoven, as well as working as a youth coach.

“He won the 2023 Johan Cruyff Shield and the 2022-23 KNVB Cup, van Nistelrooy stepped down in the summer of 2023 citing a lack of support from the club’s hierarchy.

"At the end of the day, every fledgling manager and coach needs the opportunity, and we’d have to see whether he’s a good appointment.

“The problem that Burnley have is that they’d be looking for an immediate return to the Premier League, and for that you would probably want to appoint someone who has won promotion from the Championship before.

"At the end of the day we’ll have to wait and see whether Ruud will get the nod ahead of the candidates that I have mentioned."

Palmer believes that interim head coach Craig Bellamy should be in the mix to be appointed as the club's permanent boss after working as Kompany's assistant over the past two seasons.

The Dutchman has only had one senior management job, coming at PSV Eindhoven, and he did well with the Eredivisie giants, leading them to cup success, as they lifted the KNVB Cup, and he also won the Johan Cruyff Shield - the Dutch equivalent of the Community Shield.

Like Burnley in the Championship, managing PSV brings high expectations and a demand for success, so the 47-year-old would be able to deal with the pressures of having to lead the club to promotion.

Having been out of work for over a year, van Nistelrooy will have a point to prove, and a return to England, where he spent a number of years with Manchester United, could be appealing to him.

No Championship experience certainly shouldn't put the Clarets off a move for the Dutchman, and he could be an excellent appointment if his time at PSV is anything to go by.
