FC Barcelona have been quite careful and attentive to the issue of contract extensions at the club. After going through some troublesome situations in the past, the Catalan giants are no longer willing to make those same mistakes. Keeping that in mind, Barcelona have been much quicker to renew their key players this time.
First came the contract renewal of Ronald Araujo, which needed to be sorted out as soon as possible. Soon after, following the renewal of Gerard Martin, Barça turned their attention towards the Golden Boy duo of Pedri and Gavi. With that sorted as well, Barcelona then chose to focus on Pau Cubarsi as well.
Now, even the 18-year-old Barcelona defender’s contract has been renewed officially. With so many key players having already extended their contracts, the likes of Inigo Martinez, Marc Bernal, and Lamine Yamal are also going to be renewed without any doubts.
However, there are a few other cases that Barcelona Director Deco does need to resolve as soon as possible. With little to no progress on these cases that see their contracts all expire in 2026, ones highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the uncertainty hanging over them can be problematic in the future.
Andreas Christensen (28 years old):
The Danish defender has barely had any minutes this season and his injuries have been a massive reason behind that, even as he is close to a return now. Barcelona, however, are open to listening to offers for the player and his initial arrival as a free agent would make a sale quite profitable.
Eric Garcia (24 years old):
Hansi Flick himself stopped the departure of the Spanish centre-back, and has been trying to give him a more prominent role since. With Inigo Martinez aging, Andreas Christensen potentially leaving, and Ronald Araujo’s uncertain future despite his recent renewal, all mean that Garcia has ways to find more and more minutes as time goes on.
Inaki Pena (25 years old):
Initially, Barcelona wanted to offer the Spanish goalkeeper a renewal. However, Wojciech Szczesny’s clear improvement and approval from Hansi Flick has made the Spaniard doubt his future at the club. For now, there will likely remain some sort of uncertainty about his future until the end of the season as his contract expires in 2026.
Pablo Torre (21 years old):
Despite being fully dedicated to Barcelona and making a name for himself at the club, Pablo Torre’s entourage believes he needs more playing time. While his potential is undeniable, the youngster also faces the challenge of several world-class players in his position as well. Thus, to ensure he gets minutes, his camp remains cautious.
Frenkie de Jong (27 years old):
The Dutchman’s future initially looked to be away from the club, but things have gradually changed. With Hansi Flick now completely trusting the player and his improvement being evident, Deco remains convinced by the player’s ability but also suggested that his contract renewal will be sorted when the time comes.
