Millwall have several players who have entered the final year of their contracts.
Millwall will currently be focused on finding a new head coach after Neil Harris made the decision to step down, and his replacement will need to agree fresh terms with several players before the January transfer window opens if he does not want to risk losing them for nothing.
In England, once a player has entered the final six months of their contract, clubs from abroad can complete a deal to sign them by agreeing a pre-contract, while in the final month, domestic clubs can also make offers to bring them in for free.
Millwall have a number of players who are set to be out of contract in June 2025, and given the approach that the Lions have decided to take regarding renewals, there is a risk that clubs in other countries could make a move for them in January.
Millwall's Director of Football, Steve Gallen, discussed the issue in an interview with Millwall TV, via London News Online.
"As you can imagine a couple of agents of players are ringing me up and asking me," said Gallen.
"The first thing to say is we have got a few out of contract and them lads are doing really, really well. My advice to those players is to just keep doing that.
"I’ve been speaking to the chairman about this and the rest of the board, we all feel we can’t start talking about contracts with anybody until we know we are in a safe position, that we’re not looking over our shoulder.
"We want to keep looking up the table but at the moment there won’t be contract talks with anybody whose contract is running out at the end of the season."
Let's take a look at some of the players who are set to be out of contract at The Den next year.
Millwall striker Tom Bradshaw will be out of contract next summer.
The 32-year-old was prolific in the Championship for the Lions during the 2022/23 season, but he has struggled to recreate that goalscoring form since then, so there is every chance that he will be allowed to depart when his current deal comes to an end.
George Honeyman is another Millwall player who will be out of contract in 2025.
The former Sunderland midfielder has featured regularly for the Lions this season, so it will be interesting to see whether he is offered fresh terms.
Duncan Watmore is another ex-Sunderland player who has featured regularly for Millwall this season and is also out of contract next year.
The 30-year-old scored five goals in the first six Championship games of the season, so he will hope that he can find that form again as he edges closer to the end of his deal.
Experienced defender Shaun Hutchinson has entered the final 12 months of his deal, and will leave the club next year if nothing changes.
The 34-year-old has often been brought off the bench to help see games out this season, but has captained the side when included in the starting lineup.
Midfielder George Saville has been a regular feature for the Lions since he returned to the club in 2021.
According to London News Online, his deal is set to run out in the summer of 2025.
Gallen explained in the interview with Millwall TV that the Lions are well aware of his importance to the club.
"It is very, very important for George Saville to be around at this football club. He has really helped the younger lads. He is a proper club man and we don’t lose sight of that," said Gallen.
Ryan Leonard will also see his deal come to an end next summer as things stand, as per London News Online.
He was awarded Player of the Year at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, and will no doubt hope that he can impress again this season to earn a contract extension.
Billy Mitchell came through the academy at Millwall but, according to Transfermarkt.com, his contract will run out in June.
The midfielder's minutes have been limited this season, so he will hope that he gets an opportunity to show that he is worthy of a new deal before his current one comes to an end.
Connal Trueman is currently on loan at Crawley Town, but his Millwall contract will run out in the summer, as per Transfermarkt.com.
Given that he has been sent out on loan twice this year, it seems unlikely that the goalkeeper will be handed a new deal.
