Last summer, one of Chelsea’s priorities became getting rid of Raheem Sterling.

The winger had not performed well in his two years at the club, and the incoming Enzo Maresca clearly had no interest in using him. But after a summer freeze out, the best the Blues could do was loaning him to Arsenal.

That worked well in getting him (at least partly) off the wage bill and in cleaning space in the squad, but does mean he will be back in just a few weeks for the whole process to start again.

In the meantime, we’ve developed a new problem along the same lines with Christopher Nkunku. He’s not played well, showed little interest in trying to earn a place back in the team with his efforts on the pitch, and now has become another albatross on a big contract to try and move on.

Arsenal told to steer clear of Nkunku

Arsenal are one of the teams most strongly linked with a move for Nkunku as we try to shift him, but Charles Watts, who writes about the Gunners for CaughtOffside, has told them not to go after the winger:

“I know Christopher Nkunku has been linked with Arsenal recently, but I just don’t see that happening,” Watts wrote.

“I’m not sure the Arsenal fanbase could take the club signing another player from Chelsea to be honest. He’s a good player and probably hasn’t played enough at Chelsea to be able to show all of his qualities, but I don’t see him being the attacker that Arsenal need to take them to the next level.

“The last thing they need is to bring in another disillusioned Chelsea player who has struggled for form and confidence. Raheem Sterling has to be the last of that type of signing. So this transfer link isn’t one I see going anywhere.”
