Manchester United rebuffed a number of approaches made for Harry Maguire this summer.

Indeed, the resurgent centre-half’s performances across 2024/2025 had prompted numerous suitors to test United’s resolve this transfer window, after which they were swiftly informed that Maguire would be staying put at Old Trafford.

Back in January, the board opted to activate the one-year option in his contract, meaning his deal is now set to expire in the summer of 2026, as opposed to this June.

From then, it’s thought that Maguire has already done enough to earn an extension, with the expectation being that he puts pen to paper on fresh terms towards the end of the campaign, barring any significant changes in his form.

The 32-year-old arrived at United back in 2019 for a world record £80 million fee, signing from Leicester City to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ranks.

Solskjaer would eventually go on to make Maguire captain within just five months of the move, before Erik ten Hag stripped him of the duties in 2023, awarding the armband to Bruno Fernandes instead.

For the United fans who stuck by the England international during his turbulent spells, it’s been wonderful to see him reap the plaudits he’s deserved over the last one-and-a-half years.

He had been forced to play a heavily reduced role in Ten Hag’s maiden term, making just eight Premier League starts in total throughout 2022/2023.

Maguire reacts to transfer interest

Once the window opened upon the culmination of that season, United accepted a £30m bid for Maguire from West Ham. However, the transfer failed to materialise when an agreement on personal terms could not be reached.

As a result, Maguire stayed and fought for his place, eventually working his way back into the starting XI, where he has since looked like a player reborn.

Reflecting on United’s decision to keep hold of him this year, he said (via BBC Sport): “The clause was in their hands. There was no option for me there. There was no talking. It was just that they activated it and it got extended.

“I’m pretty sure the club made it clear this summer that I can’t leave on any terms. A couple of clubs enquired and I think they got a quick response.”
