The LA Galaxy wrapped up the first half of the 2025 MLS regular season with their first win after going winless in their first 16 games beforehand. One of several reasons for the defending champion's decline this year has been the renovations to their roster.

To meet the constraints and regulations that the league's salary cap has in place, the general manager of the LA Galaxy, Will Kuntz, had to make a number of difficult decisions this past winter.

Fan favorites like Marky Delgado and Dejan Joveljic were traded within the MLS Western Conference and other names like Gaston Brugman and Jalen Neal were sent East.

Riqui Puig sustained a serious injury to his ACL during last year's playoffs and is not expected back in 2025. The team had high expectations, especially with Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil shining last season.

Midfield has been a position on the LA Galaxy's roster that has been met with much scrutiny. Head Coach Greg Vanney has been relegated to finding a balance and the proper mix of some veterans like Marco Reus, Diego Fagundez and Edwin Cerrillo along with newcomers Lucas Sanabria, Elijah Wynder and others.

Who has been the best and worst midfielder for the LA Galaxy thus far?

The Los Angeles Galaxy have only netted 15 goals this season thus far. They have given up more than twice that amount.

Two of the team's best scorers have been Marco Reus and Diego Fagundez. These two players are normally listed as midfielders. However, due to the number of injuries on the roster the six-time MLS Cup winners have faced, Vanney has had to move Reus and/or Fagundez up top in some games.

Their versatility has been crucial from these two veterans. Reus has four assists to boast as well this season. That's two more than the next closest players as a trio of LA Galaxy members have two (Gabriel Pec, Miki Yamane, and Miguel Berry).

While Reus (the Player of the Month for May) has played just 11 games, Fagundez has played in all 17 for the Galaxy. He is the only member of the team not to miss a game this season. He has even filled in as captain when defender Maya Yoshida has been ruled out of play.

Fagundez has accomplished so much this year. While captaining during his 400th career MLS game, the midfielder recorded his 150th goal in his career. He is now the youngest player to accomplish this feat.

The midfielder who has struggled the most is Edwin Cerrillo. He has not had an impressive season unlike Reus and Fagundez.

Cerrillo is much younger than these two teammates, as he does not turn 24 until October. However, he has only one assist this year and has not found the back of the net since the LA Galaxy's 4-2 win last September against LAFC. In fact, that is his lone goal since joining both the LA Galaxy and MLS in 2023.

Cerrillo has struggled defensively in games where the LA Galaxy appear unable to stop their opponents from scoring. The team gave up four goals in a loss against the Portland Timbers and were creamed during the 7-0 blowout on the road against the New York Red Bulls.

Fagundez, perhaps, has the slight edge over Reus for being the best midfielder. Without a doubt, Cerrillo has been the worst of the three.

All three midfielders are expected to play (and potentially start) on Saturday when the Los Angeles Galaxy travel to the Midwest to play St. Louis City SC.
