The ACN Match Review 24/25 – Watford (a)

How did we play?

Lots of attacking intent in the first half and unlucky not to be more than 1-0 up. We lost our way after the break, and then found it again. Plenty that could have been done better – and we should have been seeing this game out against nine men – but ultimately we won a tricky away fixture and kept a clean sheet with a still very depleted team.

What was the best bit about the day?

JHT looked like he hated every second of it but it was nice to roll back the years with some post-match manager cheers in front of the away end.

What was the worst bit about the day?

The anxious moments during the second half when we were struggling to get out of our own half and the numerical advantage seemed barely there, but the substitutes helped us regain a bit of control to see it out.

Hero of the match

Lucien Mahovo has fitted in brilliantly and was unlucky not to score. A special mention too for Emi Marcondes who led the line as chief shithouser. Speaking of which, Tom Cleverley going on about the “dark arts” made sense when I saw the worryingly large number of fully grown adults wearing Harry Potter scarves on the train back from Watford Junction after a day out at the nearby Warner Bros studios. Cast spells, not aspersions, Tom!

How do you rate Vicarage Road as an away day?

Being a Capital Canary, this is a nice local one for me – like José Córdoba, I didn’t even have to set an alarm. As usual at Watford there were howls of anguish from people discovering for the first time that it’s the only away end in the league that doesn’t sell alcohol. The concourse remains very small and cramped (the reason for the ban), though at least they let people outside at half time now which helps the situation slightly.
