Anthony Elanga made a first start for the visitors, who dominated both chances and possession during the opening 45 minutes but were unable to make a breakthrough.
Villa were reduced to ten men midway through the second half as Ezri Konsa received a red card for a last-man challenge on the Magpies' Anthony Gordon.
The stalemate saw both teams temporarily move up to second and third behind leaders Liverpool ahead of the rest of Saturday's opening round of fixtures.
