Things were looking good for Bayer Leverkusen when they went into the break 1-0 up against a 10-man Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
However, the Spanish side came from behind to win 2-1 after a hectic second half that saw Piero Hincapie sent off for the Germans.
Speaking after the game, Jonathan Tah was disappointed that Leverkusen couldn't keep their cool in the frenetic atmosphere in Madrid.
"We gave Atletico the feeling that it could be a fight and that there was still something in it for them, and then we didn't play maturely enough until the end," said the Bayer 04 centre-back after the final whistle.
“We allowed ourselves to be provoked. We have to learn to keep our heads in games like this one.”
Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso summed up the game as follows:
"We were very stable until the break. Then Atletico started to get into the game and we were unable to create any positive moments.
“After the equaliser, they took the game where they wanted. The game was decided on an emotional level today. But I'm sure this experience will help us in the next few games.”
