Former Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny insists he believes in Thiago Motta’s projects, although a ‘huge change’ saw the Bianconeri drop points and face cup eliminations this season.
The Poland international was the MOTM in Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Benfica last night in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
Szczesny retired after leaving Juventus by mutual consent in the summer but returned to action only a few weeks later when Barcelona needed a replacement for the injured Marc André Ter-stegen.
“It’s very strange. I have to say that the period when I wasn’t playing helped me a lot to mentally prepare for matches and get back into the rhythm of playing without the responsibility of being on the pitch,” the ex-Juventus keeper told Sky Sport Italia.

“The coach gave me the opportunity when I was ready. I’ve played quite a few games in my career, and experience helps. Physically, I feel very good, but my decision to retire wasn’t based on physical reasons. Here, I’ve rediscovered that emotion, and it’s really nice, strange, but really nice.”
Juventus signed Michele Di Gregorio last summer before reaching an agreement to terminate Szczesny’s contract, but the former Bianconeri star still believes in the club’s project.
“I’m very disappointed by the elimination from the Champions League and the Coppa Italia. It was definitely a tough moment, but as a fan, I believe in the Motta project that the club are carrying forward.
“Obviously, the consequence of such a huge change is losing points and matches, but I’m a big supporter, and I believe this project will bring great results in the future.”
Besides Szczesny, Juventus sold some of their ex-stars in the summer, including Federico Chiesa, making room for younger players with lower salaries in an attempt to balance the books and remain competitive.
Juventus currently sit fourth in the Serie A table, six points below leaders Inter. They host Atalanta at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday in their next league game.
