Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer admits that he “didn’t console” his club teammates after his Switzerland beat Italy at the Euros.

The 35-year-old spoke to Swiss outlet TZ, via FCInterNews.

This summer’s Euros has seen a number of Inter players in action with several different national teams.

Naturally, Italy has been the national team with the highest number of Inter players in the squad.

All of Nicolo Barella, Davide Frattesi, Alessandro Bastoni, Matteo Darmian, and Federico Dimarco started matches for the Azzurri in Germany this summer.

Italy had beaten Albania in their group stage opener. That match had seen young midfielder Kristjan Asllani take on several Inter teammates.

But it was a situation that was reversed yesterday evening.

The Azzurri took on Switzerland in the round of sixteen. Nerazzurri keeper Sommer started for the Swiss, whilst there were three players in the Italy starting lineup.

And it was a brilliant evening for Sommer and his national teammates. But a very bitter one for Italy and the core of Inter players in the spine of their team.

All season long, Sommer and his Inter teammates celebrated together, and faced the disappointment of defeats together.

But at the Euros, they came out on opposite sides and with very different emotions.

Inter and Switzerland keeper Sommer was asked whether he consoled his Nerazzurri teammates after the final whistle in yesterday’s round of sixteen match.

The veteran former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper replied “No.”

“I’m just very happy with the way that we played,” he continued.

“It was a well-deserved win,” the Switzerland keeper went on.

Sommer said that “It was disappointing for them, of course.”

“But it’s great for us,” he furthermore added. Now I’m just looking ahead to the next match.”
