Eddie Howe was forced to take Anthony Gordon off on Sunday.
Harvey Barnes was already getting ready to be introduced to the action with Newcastle leading 2-1 at Nottingham Forest, though not clear who he was going to replace.
With Anthony Gordon suddenly pulling up in obvious pain, that decision was made even easier.
As even if Gordon wasn’t the one originally set to be replaced with ten minutes to go, Harvey Barnes for the former Everton winger was now straightforward.
Post-match, Eddie Howe has given this update on Anthony Gordon:
“It looks like a similar problem that he had the other week with his hip.
“We hope it is not serious.
“I don’t know more at the moment.
“I would say he is a doubt for England because he came off.”
Ahead of Sunday’s match, it was a bit of a surprise to see Emil Krafth missing from the matchday squad, with the defender having been named in all 13 previous matchday squads (cup and league) this season.
However, that mystery has now been answered by the Sweden FA.
Their official statement and squad update for the November internationals reading:
“Emil Krafth and Eric Smith have been forced to withdraw from the men’s national team’s upcoming Nations League gathering.
“Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has called Emil Holm and Samuel Dahl into the squad.
“The men’s national team gathers on Monday in Marbella, Spain, to recharge before the upcoming final matches in the group stage of the Nations League.
“Slovakia awaits next Saturday and the Tuesday after that, Azerbaijan at the Strawberry Arena.
“Now, however, the two players are forced to withdraw from the squad.
“Newcastle’s Emil Krafth and Eric Smith of FC St Pauli miss the games due to injuries.
“Jon Dahl Tomasson has called Emil Holm (Bologna FC) and Samuel Dahl (AS Roma) into the squad.”
