Sunderland have enjoyed a fantastic start to their 2024/25 campaign, as they sit top of the Championship table on 18 points after their first eight games.

From those first eight league games, they have won six and scored a total of 16 goals; the highest in the division. Sunderland entered a new era over the summer, and there is a real sense of optimism at the Stadium of Light currently.

Regis Le Bris took over as manager in June of this year, and has enjoyed a dream start to life in the North East of England. He has won the Sunderland faithful over almost immediately as he has established the club as a serious contender for promotion.

His young squad is full of incredible talent, and there is a huge amount of potential for the club if they do earn promotion to the Premier League this season.

One player that has really stepped up over the last year or so is 19-year-old Jobe Bellingham.

The attacking midfielder is such an important player for Sunderland despite his age, and the Black Cats will rely on him, among others, to get them over the line in the Championship.

The Black Cats face off with Leeds United this coming Friday, and the Whites should be very fearful of Jobe Bellingham after his performance in midweek. On top of that, they will remember his winner against them last season at the Stadium of Light.

Bellingham has been asked to play a slightly deeper role in midfield than last season, and as a result, he has had more opportunities in front of goal.

That said, he managed to score his first of the season earlier this week, and it was one to remember.

The Black Cats hosted Derby County on Tuesday, and put on a fantastic display.

Bellingham popped up shortly before half-time with the first goal of the evening and his first of the season. The midfielder latched onto a loose Derby pass, before taking the ball forward and firing it into the top left corner from 25-yards to give his side the lead.

It was a superb way to open his account for the season, and hopefully it will allow him to push on and score more in the coming weeks and months.

Wilson Isidor grabbed Sunderland's second ten minutes after half-time to wrap up the impressive 2-0 victory at home.

Leeds fans would have watched Bellingham's stunner on Tuesday and rolled their eyes, knowing that they will have to come up against him and his confident teammates this Friday.

Not only that, they will remember what happened the last time they travelled to the Stadium of Light.

Last December, Leeds and Sunderland faced off in what was an incredibly tight affair, but the difference-maker came with roughly 15 minutes to go, as Jobe Bellingham scored a close-range header to break the deadlock and score the game's only goal.

In fact, that was the only goal scored across both encounters between the two clubs last season, so Leeds will remember that moment even more vividly. After Bellingham opened his account for the season on Tuesday, Leeds will be praying that his form does not continue into this weekend.

It is bound to be yet another close affair between the sides, and Bellingham certainly has the ability to stand out in a game of this matter.
