Recent injuries to Chelsea’s strikers and wingers have caused a bit of an attacking crisis, which has made it easy to forget that the dominant storyline until that game against West Ham where both Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu were hurt was the goalkeeper situation.

Robert Sanchez had been dropped for the second time in two seasons, and that game was Filip Jorgensen’s initiation as first choice. The Dane has been given the gloves because of regular errors from Sanchez, but there are still major doubts about the youngster’s potential too. He’s not forced his way in because of his own quality, he’s been given a chance because the other option is so bad.

Chelsea continue to be linked with all manner of transfer targets to try and upgrade them this summer. It’s not an easy task – most top teams are looking for a young, talented keeper who can stop shots and play with the ball at their feet too.

Djordje Petrovic dominates goalkeeper stats.

A glace at the graphic above from DataMB shows that there is one outstanding player in Europe right now who plays far more passes than any other stopper. He’s also above average on save percentage too.

His name is Djordje Petrovic and Chelsea fans may be familiar with him – he was the man who unseated Sanchez as first choice a year ago.

The fantastic irony, of course, is that he was replaced by Jorgensen in the summer because he allegedly wasn’t good enough with his feet.

His development on loan at Strasbourg this season has been exceptional. We wonder what it would take for him to get given a second proper crack at being our number one? He didn’t do much wrong a year ago, and looks to have improved since then.
