St. Pauli today announce that, on German Diversity Day, the Bundesliga side and LichtBlick will install the world’s largest solar panel in rainbow colours on the north stand of the Millerntor Stadion roof.
In a press release, St. Pauli stated that they and LichtBlick have “enjoyed a close partnership based on shared values since 2013”. The partners have raised awareness of social issues through creative projects, with the ‘Rainbow Project’ becoming their latest collaboration while setting a visible example – “for the energy transition and for an open society.”
The instillation of the solar panel with begin during the summer break and will be operational for the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. The 1,080 modules will be arranged in the colours of the rainbow, and will generate approximately 285,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
As a symbol of tolerance and diversity, the rainbow flag flies above the south stand of the Millerntor Stadion and are always vocal about their beliefs.
“We are currently seeing in many countries, including Germany, that queer people are coming under pressure. Pride parades are being attacked and LGBTQI people are being attacked. We will not accept this, but will unequivocally support the queer community and mark the Millerntor Stadion as a safe place for all people […] The rainbow solar panel on the roof of the Millerntor Stadion should symbolise our inclusive community,” read a St. Pauli statement on the club’s website.
