Jørgen Strand Larsen scored a late equaliser as Wolves held Tottenham to a 2-2 draw to cap off a disappointing 2024 for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
First-half goals from Rodrigo Bentancur, and then Brennan Johnson after Heung-Min Son had missed a penalty, cancelled out Hwang Hee-chan’s stunning opener for the visitors six minutes into the match, but substitute Strand Larsen smashed home the equaliser for Wolves with four minutes of normal time remaining in the second half.
The draw continues Vitor Pereira’s unbeaten start as Wolves manager and keeps Tottenham in 11th place, seven points off the Champions League places.
Here are five things we learnt from the match…
When Hwang Hee-chan curled the ball into the goal off the post from a perfectly worked Wolves free-kick, it was yet another obstacle Tottenham would have to overcome. Unfortunately for Spurs, that goal also came with an unwanted record as they became the first side to concede the first goal at home fifteen times in a calendar year. Not a statistic Postecoglou or any Tottenham fan be pleased with.
The impact Pereira has had on a struggling Wolves in such a short space of time should not go unnoticed. Unlike the end of Gary O’Neil’s spell, Wolves look like a structured unit under Pereira, and the Portuguese is starting to get the best out of his star assets, with Cunha, Hwang and Rayan Aït-Nouri all shining since the new manager’s arrival. Strand Larsen’s late equaliser ensured the visitors end 2024 on a high and gives them more hope that they can stay up this season.
Cunha was the standout player for Wolves against Tottenham while he was on the pitch. The Brazilian, who has been in scintillating form this campaign, was forced off with what looked to be a knee injury, with an ice pack wrapped around his left knee as the TV cameras panned to him on the away bench. Linked with a move away from Molineux, and a potential FA ban on the way for a post-match altercation in a defeat to Ipswich, this could be both the best and worst time for the 25-year-old to get injured.
Destiny Udogie’s comeback from injury lasted no longer than one-and-a-half matches, as he pulled up and was replaced early into the second half by Sergio Reguilon. Whilst the extent of the injury to the Italian fullback is unknown, it will fell like another blow to Postecoglou, who remains without ten first=team players through injury or suspension.
A draw against Wolves caps off a 2024 of trials and tribulations for Tottenham and Postecoglou. Although they have picked up 22 wins in all competitions, they also lost 18 times across the calendar year, and while there have been positives, things have certainly been more negative of late and Postecoglou faces a big challenge to turn this team around in 2025. With a win percentage of 46.8 per cent, 2025 will need to be a better year for the north Londoners.
