According to a report on Thursday from French outlet L'Equipe, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a fee with Bayern Munich for Mathys Tel, for a fee of 60 million Euros, which is the equivalent of a little over 50 million pounds.
They state that the Frenchman must now decide whether or not he wants to join. It has been widely reported that he is not short of offers this month, so there is certainly no guarantee that he will choose Spurs.
You would, however, like to hope that he appreciates Spurs' willingness to invest in him and agree a fee before anyone else. Furthermore, he would basically be guaranteed game time at Spurs. Anywhere across the attack. Ange's side barely have any players, and those available are running on empty.
Out of all of the clubs interested in him, he would get the most minutes at Spurs. No doubt about that. That said, a permanent deal has plenty of different permutations. The player really wants to succeed at Bayern, so may rather hope for a loan deal, establish himself - and (ideally) go back to Bavaria and get regular game time next season.
That too, and with a permanent deal, there is more to consider than just Spurs having players injured at the moment. What happens when (if) everyone is fit - even if that doesn't happen until next season? He is good enough to get games regardless, but will he back himself for that?
Interestingly, amidst all the speculation, Tel started for Bayern against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League last night, playing off the left hand side. He played 62 minutes, and had seven shots - before being substituted.
One of the reasons that the 19-year old does not get much game time is quite close to home. Although a versatile player, he is naturally a striker, and well - in the summer of 2023 - we all know the acquisition that Bayern made.
That is no slight on the player however. Not playing over arguably the best striker in world football is not an insult. It does mean that he needs to play games, however. As touched on above, he can play wide, but more in the "inside forward" mould, whilst manager Vincent Kompany likes to use touchline wingers, meaning he has started just two Bundesliga games this season. Even when Harry Kane was out injured, Kompany used Thomas Muller up front.
Nevertheless, let's hope Kane and Eric Dier put in a good word. One more Spurs assist for Kane.
