Learn more about pioneering women’s team Manchester Corinthians and meet some of their former players at a special event on Saturday 2 August.

Free to attend, the event will take place at Hebden Bridge Picture House from 16:00-17:30 (UK), helping raise funds for the Hebden Bridge Women’s Walking Football Team.

Formed in the late 1940s in defiance of the FA ban on women’s football, the Didsbury-based Corinthians competed with teams around the world for almost half a century.

From winning tournaments in Venezuela to beating Juventus, their fascinating story intertwines with that of Manchester City, with some of their players helping to form our first-ever women’s team back in 1988.

The connection is felt even more deeply by the fact that City’s legendary former goalkeeper, Bert Trautmann, also coached the Corinthians for a period in the 1950s during a tour of Germany.

To celebrate their incredible legacy, a short film has been produced by Imprint Films and driven by John Tueart - son of City legend Dennis – as well as a book written by Club historian, Gary James, on their history and legacy: Manchester Corinthians: The Authorised History.

Gary will provide a detailed background of the Corinthians at the event, before inviting former players on stage for a Q&A session.

Hebden Bridge is a particularly poignant backdrop for the event, given an earlier talk there in 2021 (marking the centenary of the FA’s ban) led to a campaign which saw a Blue Plaque being erected at Didsbury’s Fog Lane Park, where the Corinthians had played.

The event is free to enter, but tickets can be booked here.

Gary’s book is available from all usual retailers and can be ordered directly by clicking here.
