Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has responded to growing calls for Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Garcia to be called up to the national team, urging patience and perspective despite the 21-year-old’s impressive run in the FIFA Club World Cup.

In recent days, Gonzalo has become the talk of Madrid following his breakout performances during the tournament.

His displays have sparked excitement among fans and media, with some even launching campaigns to push for his inclusion in Spain’s senior squad.

De la Fuente urges caution

However, De la Fuente poured cold water on the early hype. “Gonzalo Garcia to the national team? As they say in my town, he still has a lot of military work to do,” said the Spanish coach.

“I hope there are many Gonzalos, many Cubarsis, many Huijsens, players who didn’t go through the U21s and made their senior debut directly. But he still has a lot to learn.”

While acknowledging the striker’s talent and recent form, the coach was firm in stating that one short spell of good performances is not enough. “You can’t be led by a hot streak,” he said. “He hasn’t played much in La Liga yet.”

Encouragement without commitment

De la Fuente did not dismiss Gonzalo’s potential altogether. He applauded the player’s progress and encouraged him to keep pushing forward. “I hope he continues working like this,” he added.

“You have to to earn the chance and the right to occupy a place in a fantastic national team, where there are some wonderful, very high-level players with a fantastic career. You have to earn it, but of course I encourage him,” he noted.

While the coach’s message may not be what Real Madrid fans were hoping for, it is indeed a balanced and a fair approach.

For now, Gonzalo Garcia must continue his development and prove himself at the highest level in club football before taking the next big step.
