Ederson is expected to return to Manchester City training by the end of the week following his injury-induced absence from the 5-1 defeat against Arsenal.
Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff were once again forced to thrust Stefan Ortega Moreno into the action, despite there being strong confidence in the Germany international’s ability when called-upon.
However, his distribution was highlighted and brought into question throughout the match as he and his defensive teammates struggled significantly to build-up from the back, subsequently handing possession to Arsenal on numerous occasions.
City would fall someway short of their Premier League title rivals from the last two seasons as they crumbled to an eventual 5-1 defeat in North London, despite bringing the game level at one stage in the second-half thanks to Erling Haaland.
And as the players take a few days break from their City Football Academy training duties following the weekend’s dismantling, details surrounding one absentee from the Emirates have surfaced.
According to the information of colleagues at City Xtra Portugues, Ederson’s absence from the Manchester City matchday squad at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon came after he felt ‘discomfort’ in his thigh.
It has since been further detailed that the Brazilian goalkeeper is expected to return to training with his Manchester City teammates by the end of the week, although his availability for the FA Cup fourth round tie on Saturday afternoon remains unknown at this stage.
Manchester City are due to take on League One high-flyers Leyton Orient at the Gaughan Group Stadium on Saturday lunchtime, with a place in the fifth round of the competition up for grabs after an 8-0 win in round three over Salford City.
Regardless of the fitness or injury status of Ederson, many would have expected Stefan Ortega Moreno to start against Leyton Orient at the weekend, although it was the club’s number one that took his place between the posts in the previous round.
Given Manchester City’s standing in the Premier League and their pursuit of a top-four finish this campaign, as well as their fate in the UEFA Champions League and the impending two-legged play-off affair with Real Madrid, the FA Cup may be their best chance at silverware.
