Chelsea’s proposal to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United on loan with an obligation to buy will only become active “if certain conditions are triggered”, Sky Sports has revealed.

Old Trafford executives are currently locked in negotiations with their Stamford Bridge counterparts over a deal which would see Sancho swap Manchester for London.

United’s preference for the 24-year-old winger’s departure this summer has always been a permanent transfer. A price tag in the region of £40 million was set as the window opened but there has been zero interest from prospective suitors in that figure.

Instead, interested clubs, such as Borussia Dortmund and Juventus, have offered loan proposals to sign Sancho.

United would be open to a loan move but only if came with an obligation to buy clause attached. Neither Dortmund nor Juventus were willing to meet this demand, however.

Which is why the update from David Ornstein (The Athletic) that Chelsea were negotiating a deal involving an “initial loan with [an] obligation to buy next summer” on the final day of the summer window constituted a significant breakthrough for the Red Devils.

Sancho has repeatedly expressed his desire to depart Old Trafford this summer and is described as “keen” to join the London club, be it on loan or on a permanent deal.

However, Dharmesh Sheth (Sky Sports) reveals Chelsea’s loan with an obligation to buy proposal is actually a conditional one. It will only come into effect if “certain thresholds” are met during Sancho’s loan, potentially negating the ‘obligatory’ nature of the deal.

If the thresholds are easily attainable, this does not present an issue to the deal.

But if they are potentially difficult to achieve, or can be carefully managed by Chelsea so as to not be forced to complete the transfer next summer if Sancho underperforms (such as a minimum number of appearances clause), then this presents a much more troublesome offer for Old Trafford officials to consider.

United’s stance has always been they are happy to keep Sancho at the club this summer. In Erik ten Hag’s press-conference today, the Dutch manager revealed he expected the 24-year-old to be available to him for selection this season.

The club will be unwilling to accept any proposal from their Premier League rivals they are not content with. From this perspective, given Ornstein’s confidence that a deal is “expected” to be agreed before tonight’s deadline, the thresholds included in Chelsea’s deal are likely to be more favourable than not.
