After a "fantastic" fightback to earn a point versus Wrexham, Sheffield Wednesday's squad have shown resilience that could avoid the drop zone
Sheffield Wednesday have been praised for their "fantastic comeback" versus Wrexham.
After being 2-0 down away to Wrexham at half-time via two Kieffer Moore strikes, Sheffield Wednesday showed great resilience to fight back and salvage a point on the weekend, thanks to moments of inspiration from skipper, Barry Bannan, and the young Bailey Cadamarteri.
It's been a difficult start for Wednesday in the early stages of the season with merely one point on the board after three games. However, with fans having low expectations for the season ahead, and plenty of background noise going on at the club, the 2025/26 season is set to be a slog for the Owls.
The financially stricken club were hit with a transfer embargo earlier this summer which has led to the Owls having a heavy reliance on youth players as the season has kicked off.
However, with resilient performances as shown against Wrexham, the possibility of new additions to the squad, integrating experience and youth could provide Wednesday boss, Henrik Pedersen, a recipe for success to keep his side in the Championship for yet another season.
After an impressive 2-2 draw against Wrexham, coming from two goals down to earn a much-needed point for Pedersen's side, Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick McKenna believes that in order to build on the positive result, fans need to accept that there will be setbacks as the season progresses with injuries already causing issues.
McKenna said, "In regards to the 2-2 draw at the weekend, I did not see that coming at all and especially when we were 2-0 down at half-time to two soft goals. It just looked like it was going to be a very miserable day, but the players were fantastic, led of course, by Barry Bannan."
"It was a fantastic comeback, and we were very unlucky not to win the game, but I think it's a case of tempering the expectations and don't get carried away, because even in that game, Bannan went off cramping up."
"We've lost players already: Pierce Charles, Nathaniel Chalobah, because we haven't had a proper pre-season. So, I do think we will get more injuries in the coming weeks."
With there being a lot of weight on the shoulders of the youngsters in the group at Sheffield Wednesday, fostering a positive environment and togetherness within the tight-knit squad is the main factor that could well be enough to keep the Owls up, after showcasing their fighting spirit against Wrexham.
If new additions are to join the squad, potentially in the way of free agents post the transfer window's closure, survival may be on the cards if the squad can provide Wednesday fans with their die-hard mentality week in, week out.
After a summer of turmoil off the pitch for Sheffield Wednesday, McKenna stressed the importance of not getting carried away with a positive result against the newly promoted Wrexham and instead should look at solving the bigger issues that have been prevalent for some time.
McKenna said, "I honestly do not see a situation where new players are going to come in. I think it is the case we are going to be using a very thread-bare squad and, as opposed to us bringing in new players, I think we will probably be bringing some more of the youth players into the team."
"So, as I said, it was nice to see us get a draw but temper the expectations and ultimately keep the focus on [Dejphon] Chansiri and getting rid of him."
"I know Pedersen will be happy as a manager to see that fight back, but, let's be honest, we are probably still going to finish bottom of the league, which is not the fault of the players or Pedersen. We all know it's the fault of one man."
