Many of the Owls' players could leave in the coming days and weeks.

Southampton have agreed deals with Sheffield Wednesday and one of their youngsters, Sutura Kakay, with the midfielder now set to make the move to St Mary's.

While the chances of a mass exodus from Hillsborough may be lessened by the increasing chances of a takeover of the Owls, which has also sparked manager Danny Rohl to reconsider his future, a number of players are still set to depart South Yorkshire following the fiasco that has taken place at the historic ground over the last couple of months.

Djeidi Gassama is set for an imminent move to Rangers after a roughly £2.5 million move was agreed between the two sides.

Six players are reported to have handed in their notices following two successive paydays where their wages didn't hit their accounts. One of them is Josh Windass, according to FLW's sister publication GiveMeSport.

Despite all of the issues surrounding the first team, the main bulk of the exits will be from the club's academy. Their Championship rivals Southampton are set to poach Kakay, one of their emerging prospects, from them. He turned down the chance to become a pro with Wednesday and is now set to continue his footballing journey down south.

Having previously been reported by The Star to be leading the race for the teen, it has now been stated that Will Still's side have agreed terms with player and club, and are now expected to seal the deal for Kakay.

Wednesday have agreed a £1.5 million deal that will see 15-year-old Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri join Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side have also been reported, by The Star, to be interested in one of his youth-team brethren, Romario Collins.

In total, Wednesday could earn around £2 million from the departures of the aforementioned fresh-faced trio, which would come in handy given the piling bills that their owner, Dejphon Chansiri, is yet to pay off.

Youth departures are a frustrating necessity for Sheffield Wednesday

It's a sad reality of modern football that the most effective way for clubs to balance their books is to sell off players that have come through their youth ranks.

While the issue for Wednesday is not complying with Profit & Sustainability Rules, it's an issue of actually being able to pay their players, and that they're also not selling Kakay, but getting compensation, it is seemingly their best route to some sort of financial normality at this point.

Sales of Gassama and others who may leave the club will lessen the need for Wednesday's teenagers to be pawned off, but they will take whatever they can get at this critical point.
